2014 – An Outstanding Vintage

2-10-2014 — posted by François, the 2 October 2014 at 10:02.

The 2014 Vintage started greatly. The mild and wet winter, followed by a warm spring induced an early budburst, regular growth and qualitative flowering of the vineyard, announcing a great vintage.

In the vineyard, 2014 was an historic year. One of our best vineyard, after a 3 years rest was planted in Muscadet; this block is located at  the “Château de l’Aulnaye”, on a gentle slope above the Sèvre and the Maine rivers confluence, on a 500 million years old schist terroir. A strong focus was given throughout the year on formation pruning of our 2013 Sauvignon and Chardonnay plantations, soil management, leafing and green harvest of our Crus to enhance quality, terroir expression and environment care.

After a more contrasted summer, September offered us an outstanding climate, warm and dry (the driest since 1989, one of the best vintage of the century), that allowed great maturity of the grapes, perfect sanitary state with an however moderated yield. The grapes were harvested during the two last week of September under a very sunny weather. Wines are now finishing their fermentation and already show nice concentration, complexity and fruit maturity.

Another main event is the arrival of Vincent, the second son of the family, on the estate. He joins the family team after a 7 year experience of vineyard and wine-making consulting in different international vineyards. He will take care of vineyard management and wine-making aside Pierre. A new dynamic for Famille LIEUBEAU that announces great projects for 2015.

Harvest 2013 – A mastered vintage

9-10-2013 — posted by François, the 9 October 2013 at 13:29.

Clos de Bel Abord - Château Thébaud

After a cold and wet spring that explains this late harvest and a hot dry summer, the grapes have been harvested late September and early October under a mild weather with some short rain events.

The good work in the vineyard throughout the year (including short prunning, grass cover, cares according to our Terra Vitis certification, tilling on some Clos, leaf out thining / green harvest on the Crus) allowed us to get the best ripeness.Thank to our harvest organization and technical device, as well as experienced team , we’ve been able to harvest in a record time of nine days, to ensure the optimal quality of the harvest.

In the end, the quality of the 2013 vintage looks very high with a very good degree/acidity  balance, but yields in the low average. Wine making is now on the way before ageing on the lees and presentation of the vintage on the beginning of year 2014.

2011 Domaine de la Fruitiere Petit M (13$)

Fruitiere’s vineyards are planted on sheer rock cliffs – gorgeous but not easy to farm. The wines they create, like this one are exceptional.

La gloire du vin de la Loire – 13 Feb 2013 by Jancis Robinson.

Domaine de la Fruitière 2012 Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine sur lie : 15.5 Drink 2013
Blind, I might take it for a Sauvignon, it’s so piercing. Lots of fruit and charm. So immediate ! But a bit atypical.

Lieubeau Vigneron, Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference 2012 Muscadet-Sevre et Maine sur lie 15.5 Drink 2013-2014
Racy and good piercing acidity with lots of fruit. Salty finish. Good shot!

Domaine de la Fruitière, Cuvée M 2009 Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine : 15.5 Drink 2010-2013
100% malolactic. Very minerally but quite soft. It’s interesting.

Lieubeau Vigneron, Cru Chateau Thébaud 2009 Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine 16.5 Drink 2012-2017
Racy, cool, marine with masses of fruit. Just the right stage of evolution

Lieubeau Vigneron, Cru Chateau Thébaud 2007 Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine 16 Drink 2008-2013
Honeyed colour. A little cheesy on the nose but with masses of tight, almondy developed fruit. A little sweet but with bags of personality.

Lieubeau Vigneron, Joseph Gregoire Pinot Noir 2012 IGP Val de Loire 15 Drink 2013
Very pale ruby. Only just discernible as Pinot. A bit chewy on the end without quite enough core of fruit. But give it a few years, and the climate and vine age will probably be just right.
